Cross-Casting Lord of the Rings

Last night, at dinner, chinders and andres_s_p_b were discussing Portal 2, which they have been playing incessantly.

"Wheatley's a great character," said chinders.

"Yeah," agreed andres_s_p_b. "He's like Dr. Who if he was an idiot."

"Which Doctor?" I asked. "My ability to see them as idiots varies a lot."

"All Doctors. The overall Doctor. But I was thinking Tennant."

"Yeah," I said. "I can see Tennant as an idiot. Not Christopher Eccleston, though."

"No," said chinders, "Eccleston's more an evil genius."

"Great and terrible, like Galadriel," said andres_s_p_b.

"I'd like to see Eccleston playing Galadriel," I mused. "I think he'd be interesting."

So then we cross-cast all of Lord of the Rings.

Sarah Michelle Gellar as Legolas would be AWESOME!

I love how everyone has different favorites. :)

Thanks! Gollum took a while -- that and Gimli were the hardest ones to think of appropriate people for.

For Wormtongue we were thinking largely of her performance in Sweeney Todd, if that helps with the visualizing.

thanks for sending me this link! I enjoyed reading the picks very much, especially HBC as Wormtongue (who, IIRC, was played in the movie by Brad Douriff)

Helena Bonham Carter as Wormtongue is genius. I applaud your casting choices! :)
Summer Glau, Olivia Wilde, Jude Law, and Cate Blanchett are also excellent. (Alan Rickman as a hobbit - I'd pay to see that.) I'm not sold on Gwyneth Paltrow, though. I could see Tilda Swinton, but that's because she's done that sort of thing already. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0842770/

Tilda Swinton would also make an excellent Saruman.

And Alan Rickman clearly has the scene-stealing cameo. He's good at those.

We were thinking a la Stardust...except, upon checking, I see that she wasn't the witch in Stardust at all. Michelle Pfeiffer was: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0486655/

My difficulty with names is a serious handicap in this game. :(

Nice list. I think either Cate Blanchett as Gandalf or Summer Glau as Gollum is my favorite.

I've always had a great fondness for Sam Gamgee; I named one of my kids Sam. To me, Karen is too firey. Sam has a kind of softness, a sweetness. How about Amber Tamblyn? (House, Joan of Arcadia)

She would make a good Sam, it's true.
